Wisbech RUFC entertain Surrey 1 outfit Battersea Ironsides on Saturday (1.30pm) in the semi-final of the London & SE Division Junior Vase.

The visitors look to be a formidable outfit as they are unbeaten this season and their results on the road are very impressive.

“Wisbech have been at this stage of the competition a couple of time in the last 10 years,” said manager Cliff Humphreys. “Unfortunately we have lost on both occasions. It would be a boost to Wisbech Rugby Club to go one better this time.

“I really hope our supporters turn up to cheer us on as Battersea will not have witnessed such support in the past.”

Coach Leonard Veenendaal said: “We have a number of concerning injuries in the camp, notably hooker Ollie Lake, centre De la Rey Veenendaal, number 8 Greg Brownlow and influential skipper Solomon Prestidge who are all in a race to be fit.

“We will train hard this week and make no mistake, we are 100 per cent focused on winning. It will be physical but these are the sort of games every rugby player wants to play in!”

Veenendaal felt that in a hard-fought match there were more positives than negatives.

The only disappointments were that Prestidge and Lake picked up injuries.

With scrum half Andy Claydon making his first start of the season it was a very satisfying performance.

The back division produced a lot of pace and the line was led well by fly half Will Boreham. The forwards under the leadership of captain Tom Williams laid the platform.

Eight tries from: Joe Barfoot 2, Nick Thompsett 2, Claydon, Williams, Albert Smith, Adam Bunton. Sam Cook 3 conversions, penalty; Claydon 2 conversions, penalty, Bunton 2 conversions.

“The tackling and discipline shown by Wisbech was a pleasure to watch,” added Humphreys.
