Wisbech 2L stock car racer Jacob Downey has signalled his intentions for the 2017 season with a superb performance at the 2017 season opener at King’s Lynn on Saturday.

After a steady opening race, where he came home in sixth place, Downey then demolished the field in the second heat with a commanding performance to take the checkered flag, which was received well by the large number of local fans on the terraces.

Downey was looking good in the final but suffered a spin in the hectic action and still recovered for a top ten finish. World Champion Simon Welton won the meeting final. Tommy Parrin and Max Stott (both Wisbech) also recorded top ten finishes in the 2L stock cars.

The 1300 stock cars had a large number of Wisbech-based drivers in action. Shane Moat was the best local performer with a runner-up finish in the Clive Grief Memorial to Billy Smith (Diss) after qualifying for the final with fifth in the consolation.

Shane’s father, John, also qualified for the final through the consolation in eighth and finished the final with a strong fifth spot. Young gun Karl Morris produced one of the best drives of his career to qualify for the final with a great third position in the third heat and he was unlucky to suffer mechanical problems when running well in the all-comers.

Dave Polley (Manea) was the leading local performer in the F2 stock cars when he just failed to move Jake Walker (Chesterfield) sufficiently wide up the inside on the final bend of the consolation and had to settle for second place. He then also managed top ten finishes in both the final and the Grand National.

Henry King (Wisbech) also qualified for the final with his first appearance for a while in the formula with a top ten spot in the consolation.

At King’s Lynn’s Adrian Flux Arena on Saturday, March 18, the 2L stock cars are back in action, with racing also coming from the 1500cc bangers and the lady bangers.
