Brad Bartram and Ricky Twell have eyes on 1500cc Banger National Championship

By Pete Woodhouse

Banger racing returns to the Adrian Flux Arena at King’s Lynn this Sunday (1pm) for the first time in six weeks when the annual Unlimited Banger Nutcracker takes place; plus the 1500cc Bangers with their National Championship and the Junior Bangers. A big turnout of local drivers will tackle all three formulas.

No Wisbech-based driver has ever won the Nutcracker but several big local names will be looking to change that.

Nicky Young is one of the more consistent performers and he would love to get his name on the Nutcracker Trophy which has a 20-plus year history. Young guns Ryan Leeks and Karl Parry along with veteran Keith McClagish will also feature.

Local drivers have had more success in the 1500cc Banger National Championship but success has been a long time coming, with Roy Gedge’s brace of victories in 2009 and 2010 being the last time a local driver has taken this title.

The odds of another local success this Sunday will be short with some top local names chasing the title. Brad Bartram and Ricky Twell have already qualified for the big race with Bartram showing himself to be very quick at several meetings this year. Twell is an experienced campaigner but his appearances have been somewhat spasmodic in 2018 and Sunday will be his third meeting of the year – the fact he has qualified for this race from points accumulated at his previous two appearances, though, do show he has a good turn of pace in this formula.

The last chance race is packed full of quality. The Licquorice brothers in the shape of Jack and James may well see winning an entertainer award rather than finishing in the top ten as being their best passport into the big race which is good news for the crowd. Nick Wakeham makes a rare appearance whilst it is great to see Jordan Bliss back on track after suffering an injury in the vans back in August and it has also been a couple of years since Saloon Stock Car star Lee Green last graced the Flux Arena shale and it is great to see him back out on track.

Completing the action are the Junior Bangers where Lennie Murkin and Louie Cottrill head the local entry, whilst Declan Wakeham will be starting his racing career as he makes his Junior Banger debut.
