Wisbech find cure for travel sickness
On one of Wisbech’s longest away trips at the bottom of the league side on Saturday – given their history as a poor travelling team – was a potential banana skin.
Coach Leonard Veenendaal worked tirelessly during the week on team selection and to his credit in-form Wisbech sent a full squad of 18 players.
“It makes it so much easier when you have a bench to bring on fresh legs at key moments,” said Veenendaal.
Wisbech were not at their clinical best with a number of passes gong astray at key moments.
An early Mark Laws penalty gave the visitors the lead but Woodbridge levelled matters shortly with a penalty as Wisbech back-chatted the referee.
Wisbech piled on the pressure both in the set piece and open play.
The backs had a lot of ball to work with, though they were perhaps guilty of over running the ball.
However inside centre James Napier scored a brace of first half tries and, with the impressive back row player Jacob Goat scoring his first try for Wisbech after a driving maul, the visitors looked to build on their superiority.
There were a couple of key moments in the second half as Woodbridge were awarded a penalty try for a late tackle, and shortly after came a try-saving tackle by De la Rey Veenendaal on the Woodbridge winger.
The visitors settled down again. James Napier scored his third try, converted by Laws, a further Laws penalty, and Raimondas Vinksna scored Wisbech’s fifth try of the afternoon.
Goat was awarded man of the match and coach Veenendaal feels that the team will need to be more clinical in a derby at Ely on Saturday in Eastern Counties One.
Wisbech are looking to avenge the 28-0 home defeat earlier in the season.
l The whole Wisbech Under 9 team worked well together and scored a total of 22 tries at Boston on Sunday.
Top scorers for Wisbech were Harry West 8 and Harry Davison 5.
Wisbech U11s played at St Ives.
