Wisbech Grammar girls taste rounders plate success

Rounders players at Wisbech Grammar School’s preparatory school have captured the plate in a tournament at Rugby School.

The senior side at Magdalene House Preparatory School (pictured) beat Bedford Girls’ School and Bablake School to qualify for the plate competition in the under 11 invitational rounders tournament, despite narrow defeats by Spratton Hall and Wellingborough Preparatory School, in both cases by a mere half-rounder.

Bilton Grange Preparatory School provided stern opposition in the semi-final, but a convincing 4-1½ win secured a place in a tightly contested final against Fairfield Preparatory School, which culminated in a narrow 5-4½ victory for Magdalene House.

The player of the tournament award was presented to Katherine Collingwood-Smith for her excellent fielding and batting.

The competition success came hard on the heels of a hat-trick of victories for the girls against St Hugh’s, Woodhall Spa, The Peterborough School and Bedford Modern, and was immediately followed by a 13½-12½ victory for the U11A team against Gresham’s School.

Coach Miss Joanne Gomm said: “The coaches have been particularly pleased with the team this season and are proud of what has been achieved.

“Fielding has been the core of the team’s success, with the players effectively limiting two of the opposing teams to a maximum score of only two rounders and in one case the school dismissed all nine players in only six minutes.”

The U11 and under nine A and B teams will be in action again today (June 17) against Taverham Hall Preparatory School, while the U11 C and D sides take on Stamford Junior School.
