Skaters Roller Rink in Walpole Highway was the venue for the Wisbech Inline speed skating team’s home race at the weekend.

Teams from Essex, South Woodham, London and East Midlands joined them. In the evening the club introduced some special event trophies for long distance races.

The U16 competitors had a 25-lap race for the McInerney Trophy, named after the club’s veteran racer and team coach, and the over-16’s had a gruelling 50-lapper to compete for the Doggett Trophy, named after Hughie Doggett, a much-loved and respected member.

In some exciting racing, Eve McInerney took a triumphant win in the 3-lap sprint race in a very fast and tough Category 1. James Eve was very evenly matched with Arthur Buckler in Category 2 where the two boys shared 1st and 2nd places in the main events including the 25-lapper. Arthur finished in overall first with James a very close second.

In the Masters Men’s category it was a whitewash of WISS podium places with David Billington in overall first, Luke Frary in second and Karl Bates in third, while Jo Tidman took her maiden victories in two events which saw her take overall first place in the Masters Ladies.

Kayleigh Rye made her race debut in an all-WISS category 2, where she finished in overall third spot. The youngest team member, Kirby Barker, showed improvements and finished in overall third against older skaters.

The dobbin sprints saw Mike McInerney triumph in a time of 7.93 seconds with Flynn McGurk finishing in third place. The final event was a fast-paced 50 lap race.

Sadly Mike McInerney crashed out with two laps to go after an on-track incident with Essex rival Bobby Ball, which gave way for McGurk to beat Dan King, also from Essex, by taking the inside line.
