Wisbech jet ski ace James Bushell triumphed over adversity in the British Championship, coming home with two titles under his belt despite technical difficulties in every round.

Bushell sped to victory in the sixth and final round of the event, at Doncaster Lakeside, claiming the top title in both the Sea-Doo Spark and Runabout GP classes.

But the championship titles were hard won. It was another story with the Spark class, with Bushell’s Sea-Doo performing beautifully right up until the final round, when disaster struck. As the last race of the Spark class loomed, Bushell’s own craft was out of the running and he crossed the finish line on a borrowed Sea-Doo.

Bushell, who is a partner in Tattershall and Tallington-based 158 Performance, said: “I’m really pleased to have come home to Cambridgeshire with both titles, but I couldn’t have done so without so much support – massive thanks to all my supporters and sponsors. We had issues with our machine in every round, but I managed to pull things back and win in the final round, thanks to being able to borrow someone else’s Spark.”

The man deemed “one of the most dominant sportsmen in the world” by the BBC is now heading to the USA, where he hopes to spread more British sporting prowess.

He explained: “I’m jetting off to Naples, Florida, for the first-ever American Pro Cross World Championships. It’s a new event, so we’re not really sure what to expect.”

Just 10 days later, Bushell will be racing in Arizona, where he will defend his current Runabout GP title in the IJSBA World Championship.

He said: “Obviously, I’ll be looking to come back with the trophy, though I’ll be racing against some of the best riders in the world. All I can really say is that I will do my very best.”

Bushell’s final big race of the year will come in December, when he will defend his Kings Cup title in Thailand.
