Wisbech’s Ryan flying in European Masters
Wisbech Swimming Club has continued on top form with swimmers performing strongly at county and European level.
Lucy Ryan swam in the 40-45 years age group in the European Masters Championships at the London Aquatic Centre.
Competing in the 200m individual medley, and 100 and 200m breaststroke events, she achieved 12, fifth and fourth places, respectively in her age group.
Lucy said: “The 200m breaststroke has always been my strongest event and it fell on the last day. The atmosphere was positive and exciting, and I felt brilliant in the race. The last length was very hard work, but I finished fourth place in Europe for my age group – probably the best result of my swimming career.”
For the past six months she has trained intensively under WSC head coach Greg Marsters, swimming four individual sessions every week. She also works alongside the club’s regional squad, training at the town’s Hudson Sports Centre.
The younger swimmers tackled the 2016 County Development Championships at Whittlesey. A total of 29 swimmers aged between 9 and 14 competed in 107 races, clocking up a remarkable 87 new personal best times, with 17 gold medals, 18 silver and ten bronze.
The gold medallists included Alex Gallagher (age 13) 100 and 200m butterfly, and 100m backstroke; Ethan Evans (12) 50 and 100m backstroke, and 50m freestyle; Ben Eden (12) 50m butterfly and 400m IM; Harrison Smith (11) 50m breaststroke and 400m freestyle; Joe Whittaker (10) 200m butterfly and 400m IM; Mary O’Neill (13) 200m butterfly and IM; Anya Falkus (14) 200m butterfly; Lucy O’Neill (11) 200m butterfly; and Mia Gilbert (13) 50m backstroke.
