Upwell ground out a 2-1 away win over Benwick Athletic as they played their second game in three days.

Manager Karl Schultz was forced to rotate the team. Free scoring wingers Jack Watson and Claudio Cerqueira were replaced by Mario Santos and 16 year-old Kieran Cave, who was making his second appearance for the club. Usual striker Tom Brazil sat in midfield and Matt Staton answered the call to play alongside Jonny Allen.

Upwell scored through Shane Spriggs in the top corner. Benwick equalised through Dayne Moore. Danny Dowdney picked out young Cave who restored Upwell’s lead.

The win has seen Upwell leapfrog West Row Gunners into third.

Schultz said: “With Benwick strengthening considerably since we last met it was always going to be close. Striker Callum Summers suffered a broken metatarsal which has seen his season cut short.”

Upwell reserves went down 3-1 at home to Ely Crusaders Reserves. Aaron Marshall scored.

Upwell A and South Creake played out a 1-1 draw in North West Norfolk to hand the advantage to Denver in the title race.

Upwell A’s Sergio Jimenez created the Upwell goal which was turned in by a Creake player, but were pegged back by Creake’s only shot on target.

The 10 men of Marchester overcame a strong side with the only goal of game from a penalty put away by skipper Ed Robinson after lone striker Lewis Greening was brought down in the box.

Manager Brian Symonds said: “With the unavailability of players we had to start with 10 players and for the last 20 minutes of the first half was reduced to nine after Ash Impey had to go off.”

Massimo Covozzi turned up at half-time and helped to shore up the midfield.
