By Pete Woodhouse

Bottom of Thurlow Nunn League First Division North, Wisbech St Mary FC confirmed the appointment of Mel Mattless as their new first team manager following the departure of Joe Simpson.

The former Wisbech Town and March Town manager will take over with immediate effect. Mattless will be assisted in his role by Roy Brand.

Saints stated: "The club would like to place on record their thanks and appreciation to Joe Simpson for his commitment and effort to WSMFC over the past four months in difficult circumstances and wish Joe all the best for the future."

Young ex-manager Simpson said on social media: "It was decided before the game yesterday that I'm not the man to take Wisbech St Mary forward. A huge learning curve for me as a young coach and one that I don't regret taking on.

"I thank all the players who stood by me in very difficult circumstances when I took the job on four months ago.

"I had nothing to lose when I took on the job as a 22-year-old coach and have learnt a lot from the experiences and opportunity. Time to take a break."

Saints lost 15-0 at home Lakenheath on Saturday.
