Jack strikes four goals against in-form Leiston side
Wisbech St Mary 4 Leiston Res 1
The Saints made a very positive start to life under new manager Joe Simpson as Jack Friend struck four goals with a great performance against an in-form Leiston side.
The boys in purple started on the front foot and created plenty of chances throughout the Thurlow Nunn League First Division game in a dominant display, picking up three valuable points after only winning one game in 12 in all competitions before Saturday.
Striker Friend bagged four goals on his birthday.
The only sour note of the game came late on when Stuart Beckett was sent off for the hosts.
Simpson had stepped up to replace Arran Duke last week.
Simpson (22) said after his first game: “I couldn’t be prouder of the players.
“After a crazy week, for them to settle into the game so quickly and play on the front foot was great to see.
“It’s a fantastic start but we won’t get carried away.
“We have some big games coming up and we need to put the work in and prepare properly on the training ground.
“We have some talented players at this football club who work very hard.
“I’ve got no doubt that if we can get some momentum and confidence behind us, we will start to climb up that table.”
A club statement said: “The club are sorry to announce the departure of first team manager Arran Duke.
“Arran has been a valued member of WSMFC for many years and we would like to thank him for his dedicated contributions to WSMFC.
“The club has reluctantly decided they wish to pursue a different direction and have therefore appointed Joe Simpson as first team manager until further notice.”
