Wisbech Town boss Whaley calls on fans to be patient

New Wisbech Town boss Brett Whaley has called on Wisbech Town fans to be patient and has spoken about his ambitions for the club for the first time.

Whaley took over in the Elgood’s Stadium hot seat on Thursday after former boss Dick Creasey resigned from his position late on Tuesday morning.

The club moved swiftly to bring in Whaley, who has built up an excellent reputation in non-league football with Ramsey Town, Deeping (assistant boss), March Town United and Yaxley.

Whaley, who helped the Cuckoos finish fourth in the United Counties League last season, said: “It is such a big job and one which I’m very excited about.

“When I first started out in management Stamford and Wisbech were always the two big clubs in the area.

“At this level Wisbech are such a big club and there’s no doubting that, in time, they could be playing at a higher level.

“It’s a three or four-year plan. I’ve come in and I don’t want to be here for the short-term.

“As a manager you only event want to leave a club if you’ve taken them as far as you possibly can.

“The club has got really great potential, but the danger is that you can start to look forward far too quickly.

“I will be starting from the beginning and everyone will need to be patient. First of all it will be about having a good pre-season and getting that togetherness pretty quickly.”

One of Whaley’s first jobs will be attract fresh faces to the club after Tommy Treacher become the sixth player to quit the Fenmen last week after signing for Holbeach United.

Treacher’s departure followed hot on the heels of Adam Millson, Josh Ford, Neal Spafford, Lea Jordan and Matt Lunn.

“I’ve gone through the list and the players who are here are all good UCL players. They are people who want to be at this football club,” said Whaley.

“We also have a highly-talented reserve side, so it’s about utilising what we have at the club and also bringing in four or five new faces as well.”
