Wisbech Town FC exited this year’s Emirates FA Cup competition after a 3-1 defeat at Great Wakering Rovers on Saturday.

Rovers added goals after half-time via Ollie Woodhouse on the hour mark and Jack Renew with 10 minutes remaining to secure victory and pocket £6,000. Rovers progressed to the second qualifying roun.

Great Wakering manager Garry Kimble had called the tie one of the biggest games in the club’s history.

Wisbech had got to this stage by advancing through their first-ever penalty shoot-out in the FA Cup in last week’s replay.

The preliminary round game at home to Sileby Rangers had ended in a 0-0 stalemate at the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium on Tuesday but the home team triumphed 5-3 on spot-kicks.

Wisbech could even afford to have a late penalty saved just before the 90 minutes were up. Sileby player Harris picked up a second yellow card and was sent off.

Boss Gary Setchell has just completed his first year back in charge of the Fenmen and his record in all competitions, including the Great Wakering Rovers tie, is played 48 won 33 drawn 9 and lost 6.

Back to The Evo-stik Northern Premier League Division One East action, Wisbech Town tonight (Tue 11) entertain Lincoln United and next Saturday the 13th-place Fenmen are also at home, to Marske United who are in second spot.

On Tuesday, Wisbech Town enter the Integro League Cup, hosting AFC Mansfield.
