Joe Boachie goal after 69 minutes is difference between Boxing Day teams
A draw and a narrow defeat was the return for Wisbech Town FC over the festive period.
The Fenmen managed a 1-1 result at Frickley Athletic on Saturday, December 22, then on Boxing Day they were edged out 0-1 at home to Stamford in Northern Premier League Division One East.
Firstly at Westfield Lane, Sam Gaughran’s 18th minute header separated the sides at the break, but Frickley levelled.
A Joe Boachie goal after 69 minutes proved to be the difference between the sides on Boxing Day (attendance: 319) but of more concern to manager Gary Setchell was skipper Jon Fairweather missing the game at the Elgood’s Stadium.
Setchell said of the defender: “I’ve got to have a word with Jonno. He said he wanted to have Christmas Day and Boxing Day off.
“It’s unacceptable and I’ll be speaking to him this week.”
Setchell said of Stamford’s goal which had caught out goalkeeper Dan Swan: “I just asked Swanny: Were you out of position? He said no.
“It was a little bit of a mistake. I’m not blaming Dan because he’s been brilliant for us. It’s one of those things.”
Setchell added of the derby with the Daniels: “We couldn’t work any harder. Our quality wasn’t great, but theirs wasn’t either.
“It was two hard-working teams looking for a break. We know we have to work hard for our points. We know we’re a small fish but we have to be a bit better in the final third.”
Yesterday (Tuesday) was the New Year’s Day derby at Spalding, while on Saturday the Fenmen entertain Stocksbridge Park Steels, who are a point above second-from-bottom Wisbech.
