'Fenladies' defeat Southern championship opposition
S-Tech Division 1 Cup Final
Wisbech Town 2 St Ives Town Development 0
Wisbech Town ladies secured their first piece of S-tech silverware with this excellent win over Southern championship opposition.
Both teams went into this final sitting in second place of their respective leagues but both with high hopes of clinching their league title.
St Ives took the game to the ‘fenladies’ in the opening 10 minutes but Town started to create openings, and it came as no surprise when Wisbech took the lead. Skipper Faye Kowalewsky headed home a rebound after player of the match Chloe Stanborough jinked into the box and forced the keeper to parry it out. Sophie Swinden went close and Stanborough rattled the crossbar from distance.
St Ives came out fired up after the interval as expected but Wisbech took control of the game again, keeping their opponents pressed deep in their half for long periods.
A free kick was awarded 35 yards from goal. Sophie Swinden flighted the ball perfectly into the roof of the goal to double the lead. Wisbech went on to create several more good chances and Stanborough again hit the crossbar from distance.
An excellent team display from the ladies who were determined not to pass up this opportunity of silverware. They never let the St Ives ladies settle on the ball and played some good football themselves,
Squad: Simpson, Hall, Swinden, King, Garner, Court, Hodgson, Luckett, Kowalewsky, Stanborough, Lyon, Newell, Somerville, Swinden.
Back in league action less than 48 hours after their cup final win on the Friday evening the ladies beat Cardea ladies 5-1 on Sunday, goals coming from Sophie Swinden (2) Amy Newell, Chloe Stanborough, and Yazmin Holmes who was making her debut.
