The Fenmen lost their unbeaten start to 2019 by going down 4-0 at play-off chasers Pontefract, whose four goals all came in the first half.

This was despite away goalkeeper Dan Swan saving a penalty after 15 minutes in Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One East.

Pontefract, who were also promoted from Step 5 last season, bounced back from conceding seven against Spalding United last week.

Vaughan Redford scored twice, with strikes from Michael Dunn and Eli Hey giving them a four goal lead by half-time.

This was the first ever meeting of the sides.

Wisbech midfielder Sam Murphy replaced Layton Maddison in the starting XI of an otherwise unchanged away side.

However the Hollywood-sounding Redford nodded into the away net following a cross by Michael Dunn’s cross midway through the first half to set the home ball rolling.

Dunn, Hey and Redford added to the scoresheet before the interval.

The Fenmen, who in the second half hit the woodwork, stay 14th in the table.

Substitute not used: Maddison. Attendance: 153.

Next Saturday’s opponents for Wisbech Town, Tadcaster Albion, were among the winners at the weekend.

Tadcaster Albion remain in the play-off places thanks to their 2-1 win over Belper Town which was the Nailers’ third defeat in four games and sees them slip to 11th in the table.
