Fenmen follow up with Boxing Day home derby with Stamford

By Fenland Citizen Reporter

Wisbech Town FC manager Gary Setchell wants to cut out costly mistakes as his side enters a ‘tough’ festive period.

Next Saturday the third from bottom Fenmen are away to 12th-spot Frickley Athletic in the Evo-Stik NPL Division One East.

This is followed by a Boxing Day afternoon home derby with Stamford, who are in 11th position.

Setchell said: “We’ve got two tough games coming up. Frickley are flying and they’ll go and make a push for the play-offs.

“They’re a big, strong, organised side and they have already made three or four signings.”

Two errors cost the Fenmen at the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium at the weekend against Carlton in a ‘six-pointer’.

He added: “It’s two defensive errors. In conditions like that you’re not going to get that back.

“Games against the like of Marske aren’t going to hurt us: it’s games like these and against Stocksbridge Park Steels. It’s not only points you’re losing; it’s points they’re picking up.”

January is looking to be a vital month for the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium side.

They face a New Year’s Day away derby at Spalding United, who have pulled away from the foot of the table in recent weeks; on Saturday, January 5, they host second-from-bottom Stocksbridge Park Steels; and a fortnight later Wisbech have a trip to basement side AFC Mansfield.
