Hosts level 1-1 at half-time but spurn chances at Fenland Stadium versus Nailers including missed penalty

By Pete Woodhouse

Wisbech Town FC manager Gary Setchell said his side need to be more clinical after they spurned first half chances and eventually lost 2-1 at home to Belper Town on Saturday.

The hosts were level 1-1 at half-time at the Fenland Stadium but let the Nailers off the hook, including a missed penalty.

Setchell said: "After the first half we've got to be 3-1 up. They're good chances, so to go in at 1-1 we're probably a little deflated.

"Are we working hard? Yes, but you need more than that in Step 4. We've got to be more clinical and to be a bit more ruthless.

"There's the old football saying: games are won and lost in both boxes.

"We probably didn't deserve to win but I don't think we deserved to lose. I was really happy with the first half after two defeats.

"Their second goal is us being too nice – a drop ball outside their box and we let them kick it 25-30 yards from our box. A couple of balls later, they score.

"We've got two very tough home games now (Pontefract Colleries on Saturday and Sheffield the week after)."

Toby Hilliard headed wide early on, then Belper took the lead in the eighth minute via George Milner from close range following a goalmouth scramble.

Michael Frew earned a free-kick which led to a corner, from which Jon Fairweather – who boss Setchell said was outstanding – headed home the equaliser.

Frew spurned more chances before he was pushed for a penalty, but Setchell's spot kick was expertly saved by Sebastian Malkowski just prior to half-time.

Belper sub Nathan Curtis fired home the winner in the 62nd minute.

Ollie Gale cleared off the Wisbech line while the Fenmen thought they'd levelled with 10 minutes left, but it was disallowed for handball by Jack Keeble.

Fenmen boss Setchell called on a little more fan support since the club are doing everything they can do remain at this Evo-stik NPL Div One East level following promotion: "The chairman and Snips (Dave Parsons) are losing money.

"They're doing everything they can to keep us at this level and we're doing everything we can. Come and give us an extra man. Come and get us over the line.

"Wisbech deserve to be at this level but we need 250 to 300 there (at home)."

Wisbech: Connell, Millson, Keeble, Fairweather, Gaughran, McQuaid (Gale 71), Murphy, Setchell, Frew, Hilliard (Shackleton 82), Harnwell. Unused subs: Maddison, Hart. Att: 261.
