Fenmen go ahead via Toby Hilliard but host reply five times

Despite taking the lead, Wisbech Town lost at the world’s oldest football club, Sheffield FC, on Saturday.

The Fenmen went ahead via Toby Hilliard’s 16th minute strike, but Mitchell Dunne (39 minutes) and Ashley Grayson (44mins) replied before half-time.

James Gregory (50mins), Declan Bacon (83mins with a penalty) and Bacon again (89mins) rounded off the scoring.

The game went ahead following a pitch inspection.

Sheffield FC are commonly accepted as the oldest football club in the world, being founded in 1857.

March Town United swapped places with Norwich CBS after beating their hosts 6-2 in arguably the most impressive result of the day.

Hares – and league – top scorer Jack Friend stepped up to the plate with a hat-trick to make it 16 goals for the season.

Also on target were Craig Gillies (who is one goal behind Friend), Jack Rawson and Adam Rothery.

Boss Brett Whaley said: “Brilliant result, brilliant performance! For such a young squad of players to dominate an experienced side away from home, shows that exciting times are ahead.”

March move up to fourth in the table, and go to 15th-spot Haverhill Borough next Saturday.
