Wisbech Town up for the FA cup
Wisbech Town set out on the FA Cup trail on Saturday when they host lower-league Diss Town at the Elgoods Stadium.
The Fenmen have a proud history in the competition and it’s something manager Brett Whaley would like to continue going into the Extra Preliminary Round tie.
A home tie against either Holbeach United or Ely City awaits the winners.
Whaley, whose side were in United Counties League action at PNS last night, said: “As a club, Wisbech do have a bit of history in the FA competitions.
“The pressure is on us to do well in the league but in the cup we can look to put on a real performance.
“We won’t underestimate Diss but playing against sides at our own level and the one below we should be getting results, especially at home.
“There is no expectancy on Diss’s part so they can throw everything at it.
“It’s a game both the players and myself are looking forward to.”
Other than defender Stuart Wall, who is getting closer to a playing return, Whaley will have a full squad at his disposal for the cup clash.
Both Nathan Horne and Danny Beaumont will be included in the Fenmen squad after signing for the club late last week.
Whaley said: “We had been speaking to Nathan for a lot of the summer but it looked as though he would sign for Peterborough Sports.
“He did very well for us last year. He is very versatile and I felt he would add to our squad.
“Danny rang me on Friday night saying that he had made a mistake and wanted to come back so it’s something we moved on straight away.
“I’ve been trying to replace Danny all summer but now I have got him back. He was excellent for us on Saturday and is a very clever footballer.”
Beaumont’s arrival from Wroxham is likely to see Nick Davey go in the opposite direction.
“Nick wanted me to offer him regular first-team football but I couldn’t guarantee him that.”
