Wisbech under-15s clinch derby success at West Norfolk
Under-15 players from Wisbech registered a notable derby success at West Norfolk's home of Gatehouse Lane.
Wisbech arrived at West Norfolk with props in the back row, back row at full-back but the lads were not phased and the team played like they had never played before.
It was the hottest day of the year, with no substitutes the game plan was set out and Wisbech’s pressure game played out perfectly from the off.
From the kick-off to the last play, Wisbech kept West Norfolk under pressure.
The lineouts were adapted to suit the game and match and to minimise mistakes while the back row focused on keeping West under pressure, which paid off well.
Will Wicks had a well-deserved man of the match award who marshalled the back line with vision and huge defence.
Wisbech went into the break with a 21-5 lead.
Wisbech started the second half determined to hold on to their lead but with no substitutes to turn to, they began to tire.
With West rolling on seven subs, it put pressure on a tiring Wisbech outfit, who defended resolutely.
The West Norfolk’s pressure was eventually rewarded with a turnover ball at the lineout when on to score an unconverted try.
Wisbech quickly struck back with a converted try of their own.
West Norfolk continued their fight back to score their final try, but Wisbech ran out 28-21 winners.
Wisbech U15 coach Grahame Gadd said: “It was an unbelievable effort from every player on the pitch.
"To say every parent and coach were bursting with pride is an understatement, the team showed true warrior spirit today.”
