Newmarket 16, Wisbech 7

This was the third time the two sides had met this season and with Wisbech winning both previous fixtures, the visitors were confident.

However with a number players not available it was a chance for the young guns to shine.

The front row of James Bostock, Ollie Lake and Kerrie McMullen, and later Sigitas Ciakas who made his debut, played well against an experienced home front row.

Wisbech started well with Del La Rey Veenendaal looking sharp at centre; his pace created a couple of early chances but Newmarket’s defence stood firm.

With Newmarket using the strong wind to their advantage they pegged the visitors back into their half and the home team’s confidence levels increased. Wisbech started to concede penalties.

Newmarket scored a converted try and then a penalty to lead 10-0 at half-time.

A further penalty shortly after the restart increased Newmarket’s lead to 13-0. Wisbech fought back as Veenendaal was put through in space and sped to the line to score under the posts. Steve Priest added the extra points.

The home side added another penalty – at that point with the clock ticking down Wisbech needed to score at least twice to take the spoils. In the last five minutes of the game Wisbech pressured the home side whose defence held out.

“All credit to Newmarket,” said coach Leonard Veenendaal. “They had more desire today, we did not wake up until the last five minutes.

“Although the young guns played well it was veteran Ben Chapman who earned the man of the match award.”

Wisbech play Woodbridge on Saturday (kick off 3pm) in their last home league match of the season.

“We have slipped to a disappointing eighth place in the league and I will be looking for a bonus point win, and a win away against Thetford, to improve our position,” said Veenendaal.
