Wisbech Town CC 1st XI enjoyed a comfortable Tucker Gardner Division One away win by eight wickets on Saturday over Waresley.
Waresley lost wickets steadily throughout their innings of 131. Josh Bowers pulled off two stumpings, from the bowling of Sam Rippington and Brad Apted, and a catch in a solid bowling and fielding display. This was highlighted by Zak Brown’s mararthon tidy spell of 16-2-51-3.
The hosts needed a final wicket stand of 23 - the joint second-highest of their innings - between P. Ellerbeck (14) and T. Hayden (3) to get anywhere near a competitive total.
This still was not enough as Kiwi Andy Lane and Danny Haynes opened up with a 66 partnership and when both fell in quick succession captain Alan Burton and wicketkeeper/batsman Bowers compiled an undefeated stand of 62 to win the match.
Burton said: “We lost the toss on a difficult wicket and they decided to bat, which was surprising.
“We would have bowled if I had won the toss.
“The wicket was wet and green and there was a lot of swing.
“Zak Brown bowled his 16 overs straight through and we consistently bowled in good areas.
“Andy batted really well and got us off to a good start. Danny didn’t get a lot of runs but he gave us a solid start.”
It leaves Wisbech in fourth spot, while next week Jack Hastings is available and Apted is unavailable at home to Foxton/Babraham, the team immediately below them.
Scores: Waresley 131 in 44.1 overs (Rippington 10-1-26-2, Brown 16-2-51-3, James Williams 11.1-4-21-2, Apted 4-0-14-3).
Wisbech 133-2 in 32.5 ov (Lane 43, Haynes 14, Burton not out 29, Bowers not out 24).
The Saturday second and third XI both won, the 2nds at home to City of Ely 1sts and the 3rds at home to Littleport Town.
The fourth team lost at Cambridge St. Giles CC 3rds.
