100 potholes in 60 yards in Walpole St Andrew claims motorist

It’s a case of Walpole pothole woe according to a frustrated driver who has had to pay over £250 for his damaged car.

Bernard Allan, of King's Lynn, said there is a 60 yard section of around 100 potholes on Chalk Road near Walpole St Andrew.

Mr Allan, 82, whose son lives at Walpole, said the potholes caused his car exhaust to fall off this week.

This reportedly cost him £273 to replace.

He claims the village is on the borderline of Cambridgeshire County Council and Norfolk County Council, with neither showing any signs of resolving the issue.

“The councils are saying ‘It’s not yours, it’s mine’,” Mr Allan said.

“These are vast and they have been there for years. I have had to repair my exhaust because of continual banging when going along that road. You can’t avoid them.”

Chalk Road runs from Walpole St Andrew to Walpole St Peter, and is managed by Norfolk County Council and the borough council.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire County Council confirmed it is not in their area as their boundary is to west of the River Nene.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Norfolk County Council said: “Part of the road is managed by the borough council but the main bit is Norfolk County Council.

“It’s not a cross county sort of thing and it’s very easily delineated.”

The county council are now looking into resolving the issue.

“Nothing has been done even though wheels are being lost,” Mr Allan added.

“It’s idiocy among the two councils who are arguing among themselves.

“For 20 years, I was repairing street lights all across Norfolk so I know every nook and cranny, and this is the worst road in the county because of neglect.”

Mr Allan said his son has reported the potholes in the past.
