Parson Drove man ‘panicked’ and gave false identity to police when pulled over in Wisbech

A Parson Drove man “panicked” and gave a false identity to the police when he was pulled over for driving his partner’s car without a licence or insurance.

Billy Holmes, 27, of John Bends Way, appeared at King’s Lynn’s Magistrates’ Court on Thursday where he admitted obstructing a police officer from completing their duty as well as driving without a valid licence or insurance.

The court heard from prosecutor Holly Postle, who said that on April 5, police decided to pull Holmes over in Wisbech as they recognised that the ownership of the BMW he was driving was registered to a woman.

Holmes, who was driving alone, gave officers a false name and date of birth and told them he didn’t have his driving licence on him - when in reality he only had an expired provisional driving licence.

He was arrested, but Holmes pulled away and ran from the scene straight into oncoming traffic.

His identity was discovered by police and he later agreed to meet officers in Tesco car park where he was arrested again and apologised for his actions.

In mitigation, George Sorrell said that April was a “difficult month” for Holmes as he was having relationship problems.

“He was in a state of panic and distress, he was scared and nervous,” said Mr Sorrell.

“He gave police false details, and the next day he handed himself in and apologised, that is a mark of his character. He presents as quite a nervous individual.”

Holmes received a total of six penalty points added to his licence as well as a fine of £276. He will also pay a victim surcharge of £110 and court costs of £85.
