RSPCA Block Fen centre looking to rehome sweet girl Maxine as it braces itself for busiest day

A once fearful cat who was rescued from a busy home is up for adoption, as the centre looking after her braces itself for its busiest day of the year.

RSPCA Block Fen Centre in Wimblington is looking for a home for the sweet Maxine, a four-year-old black and white cat whose needs were not being met by her previous owners.

Her confidence has grown thanks to the cattery staff at the centre. However, she can still be quite reserved and will take some time to learn to trust her new owner before showing affection.

Staff at the centre say that Maxine will accept some fuss and will “happily roll around on your lap”.

She also has a sensitive stomach, and the centre can discuss her needs further with any potential adopters.

Maxine would prefer an adult-only and pet-free home and an owner who has the patience to let her settle in at her own pace.

The rescue centre is expecting to face its busiest day of the year tomorrow.

Last year, the charity’s frontline rescue teams dealt with more animal welfare incidents on July 10 than on any other day over the summer months.

Across the country, a total of 1,157 incidents were recorded.

These incidents include giving advice to owners, transferring animals in need of help, rescuing animals, and responding to cruelty reports, which peak during the summer months.

Cassie Newman, director of operations at the RSPCA, said: “Many people are often surprised to hear that we receive more reports of cruelty in summer than at any other time of year. This means that not only are our officers incredibly busy responding to reports and rescuing animals from cruelty but our animal centres and hospitals are under even more pressure at a time when they are faced with the kitten season potentially resulting in an increased intake in cats, pets being abandoned when their owners go on holiday, and a peak in cruelty - partly due to the longer days.

“In order to be able to care for all the animals coming through our doors, RSPCA Block Fen Animal Centre needs the public’s support at this critical time.

“That’s why we’ve launched the Summer Cruelty Campaign. Together, we can rescue animals from the worst cruelty, provide life-saving treatment, and give them all the care and love they urgently need. We’re so grateful to anyone backing the Summer Cruelty Appeal and choosing to donate.”
