Anti-incinerator campaigners issue rallying cry for June 27 in Wisbech

A campaign group fighting plans to build a £300m mega incinerator in Wisbech are to hold a second public rally in protest at the proposals.

WisWin (Wisbech Without Incineration) are organising the event against MVV Environment's plans to build the 54mega watt burner on land off Algores Way.

It will be held on Wisbech Market Place on sunday June 27 from 3pm and Cambridgeshire's newly elected Labour mayor Dr Nik Johnson will be among the guest speakers.

Despite only being in office for a month Mayor Dr Johnson has already pledged his support for the campaign and has said he is totally opposed to the plans.

The rally will be the second major public protest against the incinerator, with a previous event held shortly after MVV Environment first made their hopes public in February last year attracted around 300 protestors.

The move by WisWin coincides with MVV's plans to start their statutory consultations next month.

The German-based firm has recently distributed leaflets to homes in Wisbech highlighting the "great benefits" of the project, which will see the giant building constructed close to local schools including Thomas Clarkson Academy.

The building will have a chimney that is higher than Ely Cathedral and will attract up to 300 lorries full of rubbish every day.

Virginia Bucknor, one of those leading the WisWin campaign, said: "The leaflets put out by MVV infer the 'great benefits' for Wisbech. Many people will assume this PR exercise means it's a done deal, yet they have not put in their application to the planning inspectorate yet.

"It's therefore important for people to show that they do not support the building of this monster and come and show their support against this horror proposed for our Georgian town."

Mrs Bucknor said campaigners were delighted that Mayor Dr Johnson will be coming along and said another speaker will be Bill Redmayne, former Rotary District Governor of East Anglia.

She is awaiting confirmation of other speakers and is also hoping that MP Steve Barclay, who is also vehemently opposed to the plan will attend the rally too.
