Appeal to help Chatteris light up for Christmas
With less than four weeks to go before the Christmas lights start to go up for one of the area’s biggest town displays a fundraising appeal has been launched to help with costs.
Chatteris Christmas Lights Committee, which is made up of a hardcore of eight volunteers, has launched the appeal to raise £2,000.
Over the last 38 years, the town’s lights display has grown, and grown to become one of the best in the area, but it costs to keep up the standard everyone has grown accustomed to.
The committee prides itself on the addition of new items being added to the display each year and it has a rolling programme of upgrading the lights to the more eco-friendly LED technology. Unfortunately, the costs involved in this grow every year.
Simon Wilson, from the lights committee, in launching the Justgiving appeal, said: “We found out recently that our Christmas trees are going to cost almost double what they did last year so we really appreciate every donation we receive.
Collection boxes will be placed in more than 30 businesses throughout the town from mid-October and every Saturday morning in November there will be a stall on the High Street selling prize draw tickets and taking donations, hopefully, this year we will also be able to take payment by card.
Details on how to purchase a personalised bauble to go on the Christmas tree will be posted on the Facebook page shortly.
Simon added: “There’s just eight people that form the Christmas Lights Committee and they’re all doing something every month to ensure the lights can go ahead.
“We couldn’t do this without our amazing volunteer team who come out in all weathers to put the lights up and without your donations.
“If you can help us in any way then please get in contact, we need more volunteers to help and as always every single penny you donate helps keep the lights going.”
This year’s switch-on will be on Saturday, November 30 from 3.15pm in the town centre.
