Art exhibition at March Library to celebrate Disability Pride Month
A disability charity is organising an exhibition of artwork entitled ‘Transforming Attitudes’ by local disabled people to change the way people think about disabilities.
On Monday (22) at noon at March Library, City Road, disability equality charity Scope’s community engagement members will launch the exhibition to celebrate Disability Pride Month, this July.
The event is free and will run until Wednesday, July 31.
Scope has collaborated with students from FACET, who support adults with learning disabilities, members of Eddie’s, a local disability arts group, and volunteers from Scope charity shop in March.
The disabled artists, from March, have come together to create a diverse collection of artwork. By showcasing their talents and abilities, they aim to transform attitudes towards disabled people.
Scope believes disabled people’s voices must be heard and Disability Pride Month gives a fantastic platform to achieve this.
It’s a time to come together and have much-needed conversations that can change attitudes towards disabled people’s lived experiences. Importantly, it’s also a time to celebrate the wealth of talent and the incredible contribution disabled people bring to society.
Sophie Pearson, youth and community engagement officer, East Anglia, at disability equality charity Scope said: “I’d like to thank March Library who have been incredibly supportive helping us organise the event.
“Disability Pride Month is a very special time and I know all our talented artists are extremely excited to see their stunning work exhibited. There’s a wonderfully diverse range of art, from paintings to models, woodwork, mosaics, and a film.
“The exhibition is just one of the activities that Scope’s Community Engagement groups are coordinating in the local area to support disabled people, their families, and carers.
“Scope has a wealth of experience supporting community groups and our Community Engagement programme is co-led with disabled people and unpaid carers. We help to empower them to confidently develop their ideas and deliver positive, tangible change in their communities, like the Transforming Attitudes exhibition.
“We hope the March community will join us in this celebration of wonderful talent.”
