Average speed camera bid after fatal crash on A141 near Chatteris
A driver who was one of the first on the scene of a fatal accident on the A141 has launched an online petition calling for average speed cameras.
Daniel Gambling's petition has already achieved nearly 1,400 signatures after he started it in the wake of the two vehicle crash on Thursday August 20, in which 33-year-old Warboys woman Stephanie Rivers died.
Mr Gambling described how he had tried to comfort Ms Rivers following the accident which happened near Chatteris on the road to Warboys at 10pm, and which left her female passenger, and the male driver of the other vehicle involved both hospitalised with serious injuries.
He said: "I’ve seen a lot of pretty close calls down this single carriageway with speeding cars recklessly overtaking, but last night I found myself trying to comfort a lady who was involved in a head on collision down that very stretch of road.
"This morning a report was released that one of the women in the car that I was trying to reassure at the scene of the crash, one of the ladies who I’d been trying to make conversation with for 10 minutes had passed away at the scene of the accident, and let me tell you, even though I didn’t know her, it hurts a lot.
"I can’t imagine what her family are going through or what relationship she had with her passenger, parent? Child? Sibling?
"An Officer stated to me that this stretch of road is commonly known to them as death road, yet the council still haven’t put any speed restrictions in place.
"So please, sign this petition and help save more drivers, their families and friends."
Ms Rivers was driving a Volkswagen Polo when it was involved in a collision with a black BMW.
Emergency services attended but Ms Rivers, of Coronation Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a tribute Ms Rivers' mum, Patricia Rivers and sister, Tracy Leaper, said: “Steph was a kind, caring, beautiful, animal-loving daughter, wife, sister and auntie. She will be forever loved and truly missed by all who were lucky enough to have known her.”
Anyone who saw the collision or the vehicles in the lead up to it, or has dash cam footage, is urged to contact us via our web-chat or by calling 101 quoting incident number 546 of 20 August.
