Book of poems by Wisbech school children published to celebrate National Poetry Day




A book of poems written by children from schools across the Wisbech area has been published to mark National Poetry Day.

The book published by Wisbech Reads contains poems written by children from 11 primary schools as part of the organisation's Poetry Festival held in March with Year 2 children, and also entries from a poetry competition run through the summer.

All the children who took part are to be given a copy of the book, which can be viewed online at: online.flippingbook.com/view/928492.

Wisbech Reads, which runs projects to raise literacy skills among Fenland pupils, also celebrated National Poetry Day yesterday (Thursday) by uploading a series of videos of local supporters of the initiative including MP Steve Barclay reading poems.

The North East Cambs MP, who has backed Wisbech Reads since it was launched in 2015, read a poem by Children's Poet Laureate, Kenn Nesbitt, entitled 'the Cooking Class'.

Others who read poems included Katherine Nightingale , of 20Twenty Productions, who read Dr Seuss' 'One fish, Two Fish'.

Lucy Howes, an English teacher and the literacy lead at Thomas Clarkson Academy, read ' Life doesn't frighten me' by Maya Angelou.

Louise Aldridge from the Cambridgeshire County Council library service read three short poems, one by Spike Milligan and a couple by Wendy Cope.
