At last Manea villagers will be celebrating later this evening when Boots Bridge finally re-opens - but it won't be open at peak home time.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire County Council confirmed the bridge should re-open between 7pm and 8pm this evening, ahead of schedule and in time for the bank holiday weekend!

He said: "The final pieces of work on the fences, gates, and verges will take place over the weekend but won’t require any traffic measures. Thank you to local residents and businesses for their patience during the work.

"Later in the year, we will instal the permanent road signs, which require electrical connections, and carry out the other parts of the safety work (signs, lines and red surface) to the crossroads. This is so as not to disrupt the harvest traffic and the summer events at the neighbouring garden centre. This will be done under night time closures or temporary traffic lights."

The bridge has been closed since January 7 and has meant a detour for motorists along the Sixteen Foot.

The £1million scheme has seen the demolition of the old bridge and the building of a new crossing.

Temporary traffic lights were installed earlier this week while utilities companies reconnect their services and work to tie the new bridge in with the existing road is carried out.

The new bridge has been built with improved safety for the junction in mind following a spate of accidents at the junction last summer.
