Business as usual at fire hit Fenland firm
It's business as usual at a Fenland business following a devastating fire yesterday (Monday) which involved at least 50 firefighters from across three counties to tackle it.
The blaze at the Datashredders site at Eastwood End, Wimblington, is believed to have started in machinery at around 10am and saw the nearby A141 March bypass closed for most of the day as billows of black smoke blew across the Fens.
All 11 members of staff on site at Datashredders at the time managed to escape unharmed.
Katy Hurn, the company's marketing director said: "The staff at Datashredders who were on-site at the time are to be commended for following our rehearsed protocol swiftly and the fire brigade who carried out their duties superbly, by bringing the fire under control quickly and safely.
"I would like to reassure all our customers that because Datashredders have procedures in place, we are still able to operate as usual. None of our fleet were affected and booking and pick-ups will continue to operate as per normal."
Crews from March, Chatteris, Wisbech, Ely, Ramsey, Huntingdon, Dogsthorpe, Stanground and Cottenham, along with the north roaming fire engine, attended the scene. Crews from Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Suffolk and RAF Alconbury also attended the incident.
A spokesman for Cambridgeshire fire service said: "Firefighters arrived to find well developed fire involving an industrial building.
"Crews worked hard to extinguish the fire and stop it spreading to other buildings. They were also assisted by staff at the site who used diggers to break up bales of paper. The A141 was closed for some time, but reopened at around 6pm.
"Those living in and around Wimblington were advised to close their doors and windows due to the smoke coming from the fire."
Crews remain at the scene this morning.
