Cam Sight showcase new mobile unit in Fenland
Local charity Cam Sight, who support people living with sight loss in Cambridgeshire, have launched a new mobile support service.
Funded by the Newlands Trust, the charity has purchased a mobile unit, a custom-built vehicle taking a range of low vision equipment and technology to people across the county.
The mobile unit will be on display at the two following pop-up sessions in Wisbech and March next week:
Tuesday 15 December, 10.30am – 3pm at the Rosmini Centre, 69A Queens Road, Wisbech PE13 2PH.
Thursday 17 December, 10.30am 3pm at FACT, 5 Martin Avenue, March, PE15 0AY.
Local people are invited to attend the events to explore the unit and meet Chris Feakes, mobile support lead who will be demonstrating low vision items and equipment. Cam Sight Fenland manager, Dawn Preston and community support worker, Sam Wool will also be available to offer advice and support.
Mike Jenkins, chief executive of the charity said: “The mobile unit will play an integral part in providing a 21st Century service for local blind and visually impaired people, taking support into the community across Fenland. Lockdown and current social distancing has been hard for the VI community – this mobile unit will allow us to support more people in these challenging times.”
Cam Sight are directly responding to Covid-19 restrictions in which many people blind and visually impaired people have been forced to shield or have found it difficult to socially distance and travel.
The specialist vehicle will visit people at home and rurally isolated areas to offer practical and emotional help. Outreach workers will demonstrate items from talking watches and large button phones, to digital magnifiers and Smart Home Hubs. It will also stock mobility items such as white canes and games such as large print playing cards and tactile Scrabble.
It will also deliver a programme of sessions at libraries, community centres and residential homes throughout Fenland to provide support and raise awareness of its services. Please get in touch with Cam Sight if you would like the Mobile Unit to visit in your area via info@camsight.org.uk
