Campaigners take to Wisbech to express concerns about Reform UK party ahead of Cambridgeshire County Council elections
Campaigners took to the streets on Friday over concerns about the potential negative impact a political party could have on the area if elected.
The group were campaigning in Wisbech town centre over concerns that Reform UK is growing “more bold and confident”.
Members of the King’s Lynn’s Trades Council, as well as the group Stand Up to Racism, were handing out flyers to shoppers which said “Stop Reform UK” and “Say no to racist Reform” on them.
Jo Rust, the trades secretary from King’s Lynn’s Trade Council, said: “There’s a strong need for this campaigning as Reform grows more bold and confident.”
Ms Rust said she believes that Reform UK could bring an American-style political system to the UK and expressed fears of more Reform candidates coming into power during upcoming elections.
She said while campaigning in Wisbech, the group received a “predominantly positive” reception.
She added: “If they gain any kind of toehold, we can say goodbye to an NHS free at the point of delivery as they’ll introduce an American-style health care system which none of us could afford, with profits going into the pockets of their pals.
“They’ll remove workers’ rights and women’s rights are already in danger from them and their mates in the USA.
“They’re dangerous, and the fact they’re racist too adds to this. With elections taking place, including a Cambridge County Council by-election, it’s important that what Reform really stands for is highlighted to the voting public.”
Last week, all of the candidates standing in Fenland for the Cambridgeshire County Council elections were announced.
A total of eight of these candidates are from Reform UK.
The party prides itself on being the “common sense party” which stands up for “British culture, identity and values”.
If it came into power, Reform leader Nigel Farage said it would “take back control over our borders” and stop immigration as well as cut taxes.
