Wisbech multi-storey car park demolition plan withdrawn

Controversial plans for the demolition of a town centre car park have been withdrawn by its owner.

NewRiver Retail Ltd had applied to Fenland District Council for prior approval for the demolition of its multi-storey car park at the Horsefair Shopping Centre in Wisbech.

The application submitted at the start of the month was for a prior approval of how the car would be knocked down, and did not involve permission for the actual demolition of the 360 car park, which has 360 spaces.

At the time NewRiver said the aim was to demolish the car park to make way for the construction of a new supermarket.

The property owners had laid out how the demolition would take place and asked Fenland planners to approve the works schedule.

However, on Friday NewRiver contacted planning officer Danielle Brooke to say they wished to withdraw their application.

This has now been confirmed on the council’s planning portal. There is no explanation for the decision to withdraw it, or whether or not there will be a renewed application at a later date.
