Carnival day goes global in Doddington
There was an international flavour to the weekend in Doddington as residents came together to celebrate the village’s annual carnival day.
The theme of this year’s event was countries of the world, which meant an array of suitably national costumes and floats were on show during the event on Saturday.
The traditional carnival procession through the village was followed by an afternoon of sports activities and entertainment at the village’s recreation field.
Jason Shepherd, chairman of the event’s organisers, said: “It was a brilliant day.
“Shame about the showers, but we had a really good turnout. Everyone always puts so much into it.”
Prizes were given for the best floats and fancy dress costumes with winners as follows:
Oakey Family Cup - Winner: Tommy Edgoose (Snail/Escargot); Runner-up: Isabel Clarke (Coral Reef). Edwards Cup - Winner: Mason Adams (Statue of Liberty); Runner-up: Lola Brooks (Mermaid). Adult fancy dress - Winner: Liz Brooks (Jelly Fish); Runner-up: Dan Laver (French man).
Fred Harrison senior float winner: Ladies That Lunch (Australia); Runners-up: Doddington F.C. (Spain). Fred Harrison junior float winner: Doddington Girl Guiding (Guiding Around The World); Runners-up: Lionel Walden School (Brazil). Visitors’ Cup: Fenland Shotokan Karate (Japan).
Shepherd Transport Shield joint winners: Goldstar (Paul Hutchcraft) & Goldstar (Danny Whitmore); Joint Runners-up: WH Betts (Jonathan Betts) & Barwells (Mark Chadfield).
