Wisbech woman Carol to 'Brave the Shave'
A Wisbech woman will soon be receiving her first hair cut since before lockdown - but it will be a cut like never before.
Carol Storey (62) is going to ‘Brave the Shave’ to raise money for a cause which is close to her heart.
On Monday, July 6, Carol will have her hair shaved off in the garden of the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre to raise money for all of the incredible work staff at the site carry out - which she has experienced first hand.
She said: “I really want to help the centre. They’ve done a lot for me and have always been there for me. I’ve been on and off treatment and I’m off at the moment, but it’s been really hard work.
“Unless you’ve been through the treatment you don’t know what it’s like - it’s not nice and you’ve got your home life to think about at the same time as going through the treatment.
“But, I’m still here and I can’t drink to celebrate so I’m shaving my head instead.”
Seven years ago, Carol was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, which is a type of bone marrow cancer and has received care from the centre throughout her illness.
The centre is a specialist day treatment centre supporting people living with an advanced serious illness or a life-limiting condition. Services are provided free of charge to patients and their families in North Cambridgeshire and the Fens.
Carol’s family is one of many who has been supported by the centre.
She said: “My husband passed away three years ago but he always said that we will never let this beat us. I have three sons, and two of them have special needs, but they don’t know what is going on - I just tell them I have poorly blood.”
Carol’s hair is a decent length at the moment but she isn’t fazed by the thought of having it all shaved off.
“I feel fine about it - it’ll be an experience, and people might take the mick out of me, but I don’t care,” she said. I just want to help to get some money in for the centre.”
Toni Bird, who is fundraising co-ordinator for the centre, will be supporting Carol. She said: “Carol has attended the centre for many years but she never moans. She is amazing”
