Ground-breaking ceremony to mark work starting on new Wisbech special school

A ground-breaking ceremony will be held on Monday to mark the start of construction on a new special school for Wisbech.

The school, off Barton Road, is funded by Cambridgeshire County Council, and is for 60 young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. It will be run by Horizons Education Trust.

The ceremony will be performed by the chair of Cambridgeshire County Council, Coun Stephen Ferguson, and the chief executive of Horizons Education Trust, Dr Kim Taylor OBE.

The new purpose-built accommodation will provide a much-needed replacement for the existing building in Algores Way and will provide a modern learning environment with outdoor spaces for primary to secondary aged young people.

The project team comprises representatives of Horizons Education Trust and Cambridgeshire County Council who are supported by their consultants, Faithful & Gould, design and build framework construction partner Kier Eastern and architects, Frank Shaw Associates.

The ground-breaking ceremony will be held at the site in Barton Road at 1pm.

Coun Bryony Goodliffe, chair of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Children and Young People’s Committee, said: “This ground-breaking ceremony marks a significant milestone in our strategy to provide more places for children and young people with special educational needs in Cambridgeshire.

"We are extremely grateful for the support of our partners in delivering these places which are so vital to the future aspirations of these young people.”
