A club which provides a weekly fun outing for dementia patients has been nominated for the Pride In Fenland awards.

For 20 years, the Friday Club, which meets at Salem Court, in Chatteris, has been helping dementia sufferers and their carers from the town and surrounding area.

The club has been nominated into the group section of the awards, which are being run by the Fenland Citizen and Fenland District Council.

Chairman Mike Hill is delighted with the nomination.

He said: “I think it is lovely for the group to be recognised in this way.

“There is no other service like this, especially for those periods of time which allow carers to go to the shops, get jobs done around the house or to simply relax.

“We are always looking for new volunteers and we have places for people to attend.”

The Friday Group was formed by nurses who used to work at Doddington Hospital and saw a need for this kind of service.

The club runs games, quizzes or armchair keep fit sessions, along with entertainment for its members, plus lunch and refreshments.

The group is self-funded and is run by a group of dedicated volunteers. Roddons Housing Association allows it to use Salem Court for free.

The anonymous nominator states: “The people in this group deserve to be considered for your group award.”
