Girls from a Chatteris primary school are celebrating after winning a football tournament. Kingsfield Primary School won the Witchford Sports Partnership Football Tournament for the second consecutive year. Nine teams took part in the tournament at Ely college.

Two wins and a draw saw the team win their group, setting up a semi-final against Downham Feoffees which they won 1 v 0. Isleham beat Millfield 2 v 0 in the other semi-final to set up a final that would be a replay of the first game of the tournament.

The final between Kingsfield and Isleham was an evenly matched game with Kingsfield holding the upper hand in midfield while Isleham presented a very strong defence. Isleham broke dangerously several times with Kingsfield’s Lucy Pritchard making some important saves before the pressure up front finally caused defensive confusion which led to the single goal for Kingsfield which ultimately decided the game.

Hallie White, aged 11, said: “We all played really well together and understood and supported each other better with every game. I played when we won last year, to defend our title is brilliant, we’re all really excited and the reaction back at school was amazing.”

Team Coach Max Flintoft said: “We have been working hard on our skills and the girls have put in extra work over lunchtimes. They worked hard for each other during the tournament and they deserve to get something for it.”
