Children dig in to help Wisbech care home’s garden
Community gardening week saw Little Owls visit the Orchards Care Home in Wisbech to help with their garden.
The nursery children visit weekly to share their learning with residents, and they have built some great relationships with them. The residents really look forward to seeing them.
The care home has received donations of pots and plants from staff and residents’ families.
Also, Morrisons community champion was delighted to support the project with some tools for the children and a voucher to purchase the plants needed.
This included a clematis to attract wildlife, a thornless blackberry bush, Rosemary plant and some strawberry plants.
The children had sown a selection of herb seeds with residents a few weeks earlier so they could grow in time to be planted out this week.
A daughter of a resident kindly made some bird boxes for the children and residents to paint, and the home waswere donated a bird table. These will hopefully encourage wildlife into their garden for them to see.
The staff at Little Owls were extremely grateful to the generosity of people to help get their sensory garden started.
The children enjoyed helping John, Our maintenance man, putting the trellis on the back of the pots. They wanted to be his helpers.
Sarah Watson Orchard House Manager said it was nice to give something back to the children who give so much joy to our residents when they visit us weekly. Our residents look forward to their visits and are delighted to join in with anything the children like to do.
We took the residents to the nursery to help with setting it up and planting the plants, they were amazed at how many of them wanted to get stuck in and help.
