Children to get free book after Persimmon donated £1,000 to Steve Barclay’s Read to Succeed Scheme
Some primary school children will be given their own free book to read out of term tine thanks to a donation to an MP’s scheme.
Persimmon Homes has given £1,000 to Steve Barclay’s Read To Succeed initiative as part of their own community champion project.
The money will enable pupils in Year 4 and above to receive their own book to keep to help maintain their literacy skills over the summer holidays.
It is the tenth year that the campaign has been given funds from the housing company, and to celebrate, Mr Barclay visited the new Abbot Walk development in Chatteris, where a cheque was handed over.
“A big thank you to Mark Mellors, the construction director, and Damien Ramm, the site manager, for presenting the cheque to me,” he said.
“Read to Succeed will be continuing this year to provide books to Year 4 students over the summer holidays to encourage a love of reading, and to promote use of our libraries.”
The MP spoke to Mark and Damien about the programme’s achievements, and highlighted that Read to Succeed has donated more than 20,000 books to children in Cambridgeshire schools so far.
Mark Mellors said: "We’re proud to support community initiatives like Read to Succeed through our Community Champions Scheme.
“We’re pleased to encourage literacy and education through this latest donation and pleased to hear of the support this initiative provides to local children.”
