Comic shop opens in Wisbech with a boom, pow, wow!
Spiderman was joined by Fat Batman on Saturday at the opening of a new specialist shop in Wisbech run by local councillor Steve Tierney.
The Madhouse comic shop in Alexandra Road was officially opened by Wisbech mayor Councillor Aigars Balsevics and saw lots of people turn out for a browse.
Built largely on Steve’s own extensive life-time collection of comics the shop has over 40,000 of the publications largely American, from Marvel to big characters such as Batman and the Avengers as well as the more specialist.
Steve said: “I have been collecting comics since I was about seven. I had over 1,000 from my childhood, then I had another 1,000 collected when I was a teenager. I also used to run a comic shop in Hemel Hempstead and so I had a lot of left over stock from there,
“I probably had around 20,000 comics in total and then I have bought a number of other collections so we now have a stock of around 40,000.
“It is obviously a bit of a specialist shop so it will not be open every day, instead we are going to be open Wednesday and Friday evenings and Saturdays. People are welcome to come along have a browse, sit and enjoy a coffee in one of chairs and read any of the comics, with no obligation to buy.
"It was great on Saturday to see so many families turning out. There were a lot of fathers and sons, and of course some daughters, clearly enjoying introducing their children to the world of comic book collecting.
"There were also some specialist collectors and they managed to find one or two bargains. There were a lot of Dr Who fans and also people who like Japanese Anime, so I will be adding some more of those to the stock as soon as I can to cater for them.
"On top of the comics I also have a lot of board games and other collectables, which are great fun. I'm also planning to organise specialist in the future once we are up and running, so watch this space."
