Conservative Jason Ablewhite elected new Cambridgeshire Police and Crime Commissioner

Conservative Jason Ablewhite is the new Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire.

The executive leader of Huntingdonshire District Council will replace fellow Conservative Sir Graham Bright in the top policing role after defeating Labour candidate Dave Baigent in a run-off.

Councillor Ablewhite was the top choice for voters in Peterborough and he won 63,614 first preference votes across the county, ahead of Mr Baigent who received 54,426 votes.

The pair then went head-to-head with second preference votes counted, with Cllr Ablewhite coming out on top.

UKIP candidate Nick Clarke had come third with 29,698 first preference votes, while Liberal Democrat Rupert Moss-Eccardt was last with 27,884.

In Peterborough itself, Cllr Ablewhite secured 17,060 first preference votes, ahead of Mr Baigent who won 15,471 votes.

In the second preference votes from Peterborough, Cllr Ablewhite received 3,515 votes and Mr Baigent 2,922.

Total turnout across the county was 30.56 per cent, bolstered by the vote coinciding with local elections.

The turnout in Peterborough was 35.7 per cent, but in the two Cambridgeshire districts where elections were not held, turnout was fractionally over 18 per cent.
