Wisbech drink-driver David Tibbs banned for three years for going to corner shop after drinking beer

A drink-driver decided to travel to a nearby corner shop in his car after having a couple of beers.

David Tibbs, 41, of Richard Young Close in Wisbech, faced the consequences of his actions when he appeared at King’s Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Tibbs admitted drink-driving on April 12, when he was seen visiting a nearby corner shop by police before speeding off.

Officers pulled over to speak to him, and he admitted to having a can and a half of beer.

Tibbs was arrested and taken to King’s Lynn’s Police Investigation Centre for tests. He had 50mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit to drive is 35mcg.

In mitigation, Alison Muir explained to the court why Tibbs appeared extremely emotional while in the dock.

“It is obvious by my client’s demeanour how upset he is,” Ms Muir said.

“He had one and a half cans of beer and didn’t feel like it was affecting his driving a few yards down the road.”

Ms Muir told the court that Tibbs decided to drive due to having a health condition, making it difficult to walk.

“That is why he drove that short distance,” Ms Muir added.

“He hasn’t told his partner about this. He has been teaching her to drive.”

Tibbs, who had been caught drink-driving before in 2017, was disqualified for 36 months.

He was also fined £80 along with a victim surcharge of £32.
