South Holland District Council outlines how it has advertised wheelie bin consultation as residents say they are unaware
Council bosses are anticipating that leaflets advertising a wheelie bin consultation will be delivered by the end of next week.
South Holland District Council launched a survey in July to find out if residents wanted to keep their refuse bags or move onto wheelie bins as part of a review of the service.
With a mandatory weekly food waste collection set to be imposed from central Government in 2026, the council - whose area includes the Suttons and Tydd St Mary, is looking into whether it’s time to make the change and end a situation where South Holland is the only authority in Lincolnshire not to have wheelie bins.
But when waste chief Coun Jack Tyrrell urged people to fill in the consultation form or not ‘complain’ afterwards - many people hit back to say they were not aware of the consultation.
The council says it has undertaken a number of activities to raise awareness of the consultation - and hopes that all leaflets will be delivered by August 16 - ahead of the August 25 deadline.
A council spokesman said: “The council has undertaken an active social media campaign to spread awareness of the consultation, liaised with local and regional media outlets to promote the information, included banners on the homepage of the SHDC website, put pop up banners and printed materials in the reception of Priory Road, Ayscoughfee Hall and the South Holland Centre.
“It has organised for information leaflets to be hand-delivered to all properties in the district and held market and event stalls in Spalding, Holbeach, Donington, Long Sutton and Crowland where staff could speak to residents face-to-face and help residents who are not digitally-enabled to complete the survey either through an iPad or printed copies.
“The council continues to deliver as many leaflets as it can to properties across the district. However, there have been a small number of instances where it has not been possible to complete delivery. These include properties not being visible to those delivering, restricted letterboxes, ‘no junk mail’ messaging and more. The council anticipates that all possible properties will have received a leaflet by Friday, August 16, at the latest.”
So far the consultation has attracted more than 3,000 responses but Coun Tyrrell is hoping to get 10,000.
The consultation runs until Sunday August 25, with the survey available via www.sholland.gov.uk/WasteSurvey
The council will also be holding two face-to-face sessions in which people can share their views. Sessions will also be held at the Bike Jam event at the field next to the Spalding Skate Park in Holbeach Road, on Tuesday, August 20, and at Long Sutton Market on Friday, August 23.
