Councillors praise police for being ‘quick to act’ over ‘bike gang’ in town

Town councillors have praised the work of the police taking ‘a lot of action’ over a bike gang in Wisbech.

At the monthly meeting of Wisbech Town Council on Monday, councillors acknowledged the work of police to crack down on anti-social behaviour in the town centre that was putting a big strain on businesses.

Cllr Steve Tierney said that since the last meeting, when a ‘bike gang’ of youngsters was reported, police have “responded really well”.

He said: “They were very quick to act, and they took a lot of action. They visited a number of the youths who were involved, and some of them were arrested; others have had visits at home, and parents have been talked to.

“Businesses I have spoken to in the town since then have said things have improved remarkably.”

Cllr Tierney said it does not mean it is over and does not mean the problem has gone away, but he said it is nice to see the police responding so quickly to what was “quite a big issue”.

Mayor of Wisbech, Cllr Sidney Imafidon, raised concerns during the meeting about youngsters climbing on top of the toilet block in Wisbech Park.

He said: “I was walking home on Lynn Road, I looked towards the park and I saw about eight to ten, aged around 14-16 year olds, on the roof of the old toilets. They were sat on the roof and jumping about. I walked towards them, and they saw me coming and waved at me.

“I asked them to ‘please come down’, which they did, apart from one girl who seemed to be scared of the height.”

He asked councillors if there was a way they could get the police aware of the incident and if fencing around the block could be raised to stop youngsters from climbing on it to access the toilet roof.
