Crowds fill the streets of March for a poignant Remembrance Sunday commemoration ceremony to remember the Fallen and celebrate the 100th anniversary of WW1
People gathered across Fenland today for the annual Remembrance Sunday commemoration which this year had greater poignancy as it also coincides with the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1.

In March crowds four and five deep lined Broad Street and over the Town Bridge to watch in solemn silence as the parade - one of the largest seen for many years - march past.

The parade assembled in the Mill View car park where veterans lined up with current service men and women alongside youngsters from various youth groups including the Brownies, Scouts, Guides and Beavers as well as two junior football clubs.

Before they then marched proudly past the crowds, most of whom were wearing poppies, to St Peter's Church for a service of remembrance before reforming to parade back to the town's War Memorial in Broad Street for the traditional two minutes' silence and wreath-laying ceremony.

They were led by the band of March 1220 Squadron Air Cadets who played familiar tunes from the war years.

As the crowds waited in Broad Street for the parade to return a veteran van broadcast snippets of memories from those who lived through the war, giving a flavour of what life was like during those dark years.

There was also a recording made on the front-line of the trenches, which was taken either side of the 11th hour on November 11 1918. It was played at the start of the wreath laying ceremony and added a real piquancy to the event as first there was the sound of artillery shells and guns and then the crisp sound of bird song - highlighting the peace.

Barry Howlett, a former parade marshal for Remembrance Sunday, gave the Exhortation, after which followed the Last Post and Reveille before the wreath laying commenced.

First among the dozens of wreaths was one laid on behalf of the Queen by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire.
