CULTURE FOCUS/HIDDEN GEMS: The Wisbech Radicals
For the last few years I have been part of the local Fun Palace – Wisbech Radicals – allowing me to show off my geeky side, combining weaving, old tech and Raspberry Pi computers. With Rachel of Big Sky Arts and Nathan of the Luxe Cinema, we enjoyed showing you fun stuff to do.
This year, the national Fun Palaces team are featuring ways for us to still have a weekend of sharing our interests to get to know our community, but to do it in a safe way, with ‘Tiny Revolutions of Connection’ – so if you show a new neighbour how to knit, that counts as a Fun Palace!
Go to the website, www.FunPalaces.co.uk and be inspired by the ones that are already registered, as well as looking at the downloadable pages of ideas they’ve been collecting all year.
If you’re unable to meet up physically, there are plenty of ways to do something online.
I have written a guide on digital ideas for the event. It’s on the Fun Palaces website as well.
Please get in touch with me if you’d like to run your own and I can help you get registered. It would be fantastic to light up the area on their map with all our Tiny Revolution Fun Palaces!
Wisbech Radicals will go ahead at the Luxe as before, but rather than everyone coming along for the day, this year Nathan came up with the idea of offering a space for people to live stream their skillsharing!
This way, you can pop in and share your random/fun/interesting skill and we can show it online so anyone can see it (or you can watch through the big windows!)
With the Luxe already extremely well-organised for physical distancing, the bar area is suitable for filming.
There’s light fabric between seating areas so it’s safely separated, but doesn’t feel enclosed. There are transparent screens at the bar and hand wash stations. It feels like a safe space.
With a special plant-based, natural, anti-viral spray for the auditorium; seat bookings arranged for safe distancing; temperature-taking, and fresh-air fed coolers so wearing a face covering doesn’t feel a burden, it’s the place to watch a movie or just pop in for coffee.
See Wisbech Radicals on FunPalaces.co.uk for full details and we look forward to seeing you on the afternoons of Friday and Sunday, October 2 and 4.
